Tamara D. Joseph post # 6: Blue Steel (1990) directed by Kathryn Bigelow

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Blue Steel is an action thriller about a female cop who is being tormented by a psychopath. The action definitely does not compare to twenty-first century movies; as for the acting, let’s just say that Jamie Lee Curtis has seriously improved over the years. Besides a couple of scenes where the main actress was interacting with friends, the overall feel of the movie is very gloomy. The soundtrack seemed more appropriate for a scary movie as oppose to an action thriller.

Mostly pan shots were used in this movie. A couple of point of view shots left me feeling disconnected meaning it did not seem like it was what the actors were seeing. A perfect example was when Jamie Lee Curtis, who played Megan Turner, was on a helicopter ride with Ron Silver, who played Eugene Hunt. During the ride, the scene began with the view from the helicopter looking down at New York City, and then the shot of the actors’ faces followed. I didn’t realize that it was what the actors were looking down at; it felt more like establishing shots. But I guess from another person's point of view, it might be seen as an establishing shot.

Blue Steel will definitely never be in my list of favorite movies, but I have to admit I have seen much worse. Maybe the reason why I wasn’t intrigue was because the story line was quite predictable.
