Alex Williams, Post #7, The Last of the Mohicans, 1992, Michael Mann

I have been meaning to watch The Last of the Mohicans for sometime now, and I was excited to find out that it was made in my birth year so that I had an excuse to finally sit down and watch it.  I am a huge fan of Daniel Day-Lewis, and was not at all disappointed in his performance in this film.  I thought that there were a lot of very cool scenes, mostly due to the location of the shot, such as the waterfall scene, and the war zone set.  The soundtrack was engaging, and relevant to what was being shown on the screen, and the performances of all the cast were top notch.

Despite all of this I did not enjoy watching this movie, I thought that it was boring, and I didnt really feel very much emotion for the characters.  One example of this is at the end when the younger sister and the Mohican brother go over the cliff.  I felt as if I should have been emotional over this scene, but these characters were just not given enough screen time for me to care much whether they lived or died.  Also I felt like the plot really didnt go anywhere, nothing was really resolved at the end except that the head Mohawk died, but the war was still going on, and nobody was really safe.  It made me feel like the ending was abrupt and just because you have Daniel Day-Lewis running in slow motion for five minutes, does not really make a scene climactic.

In the end I would not really recommend this movie to my friends, unless they were especially interested in colonial america, or war movies in general.  Some of the fighting was good, but it didnt hold up the story well enough for me to enjoy the film
