Post #9, Jordan Valdez, 1992, Far and Away, Directed by Ron Howard
I can remember back when I was little and my parents would be watching Far and Away. I thought I had remembered pieces of the film, but as I watched it fully for the first, I realized there was so much more that I couldn't understand when I was younger. Far and Away takes a single event in American History and gives it life. The story of Josef and Shannon is thrilling and hopeful. We root for these characters as they travel to American and pursue their dreams of owning their own land. I think what makes it such a good movie is that it is understood that this was the true struggle of people that came to America in the late 1800's. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are incredible actors and they are really memorable in this film. The only criticism I have is that I wish I could have seen more--seen how wonderful their lives ended up to be.
We do get a glimpse of crime in the film as we see some of the earlier mass crimes in Ireland and America. Although it is not a big focus of the movie, crime seems to be the driving force in various situations causing the characters to take action. The close up shots in Far and Away were in my opinion the most important and most intriguing. I felt the emotion from all of the characters by just getting that close look at their faces. I felt that pans and tilts were also a big part of this film so that we as the audience could get the feels of the lands in which the film took place, as well as get a good look at the action, specifically at the start of the race for land. OTS shots and medium shots were the other more popular shots incorporated in the movie. I truly commend Ron Howard, as well as the cast, for their work in Far and Away.
