Dick Tracy- 1990
By: Tori Douglas
The movie Dick Tracy plays into the theme of the rest of my
movies being crime. This is based on a comic strip character from the 1930’s.
This movie cast many great stars including, Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, Madonna,
Dick Van Dyke, and many more. This film took a very long time to come to
theaters because the script, cast and ideas for the movie kept evolving since
the early 1980’s.
The
movie picked up 7 Academy Award nominations and won 3 of them. This movie was
supposed to be turned into a sequel due to the success but didn’t happen due to
arguments between companies.
The
plot is a great pulp action film, where many mobsters try and produce illegal
activities while detective Dick Tracy, Warren Beatty, is hot on their trail. This
iconic figure of Dick Tracy sticks in many people’s minds because of his yellow
coat and fedora. This is a great example of a hit movie from 1990 because
mobster stories were all the rage.
The
technical aspect of the film is also interesting for the 90’s. Sound stages and
back lots were used at Universal in California, while other filming happened at
Warner Bros. After research, this film used 53 interior and 25 exterior sets.
Making every detail very important. I also enjoyed how most of the movie was
based on a 7-color palate of mostly red, blue, yellow and green- to make it
look like a comic strip had come to life.
This
film defiantly fit in with the movies at the time and could have made an even
bigger impression on society if all companies could have worked together to
create a better marketing strategy.
