Samantha Pysher Post#8 Hocus Pocus, 1993, Kenny Ortega

Three sister witches are resurrected after 300 years in Salem Massachusetts one Halloween night. It is up to two teenagers, a young child, and an immortal cat to stop the witches’ reign of terror on the town and save the souls of the towns’ children once and for all. This movie is simply brilliant, from the acting to the content in the film. The three witches are casted perfectly Kathy Najimy is amazing as the funny, perky Mary, Sarah Jessica Parker is marvelous as the sexy, dim-witted Sarah, and Bette Midler as the frightening and funny leader Winifred. The two musical numbers that are in the film are a perfect addition to the film both Midler’s performance of “I Put a Spell on You,” and Parker’s hypnotic performance of “Come, Little Children,” are spooky yet comical. Although this film is geared towards children it is a great film for all ages at any time of the year, not just Halloween. The movie as a whole emphasizes the value of families working together to help each other and does not create a confusing message about good and evil.
