Jacob's Ladder 1990

Kelly Wade post #6 -- Jacob's Ladder, 1990 -- Directed by: Adrian Lyne

This was one of the strangest movies I've ever seen. Kind of dreary and dark, this movie messed with my mind and had me confused and a little scared. It's made to play with the viewers perceptions of reality, and their expectations of what's going to, or "supposed to" happen. In the beginning, the main character is fighting in the Vietnam war and gets seriously injured, but we don't know how. A flash-forward occurs, and the main character is now haunted by nightmares that force him to become detached from reality. As the film moves forward, its hard for the viewer to distinguish between reality and dreams and his hallucinations. It seems like theres something else going on, a secret that we don't know, especially because the film uses many flashbacks to the scene in Vietnam. Does Jacob have an illness? Is he insane? Does he have post traumatic stress disorder? The way the movie plays out, we're left with many questions about Jacob's lack of a grip on reality, and what has really happened to cause him to snap like this. Are demons haunting him, or is he simply making these things up in his own mind to cope with something else? The darkness and shadows that seem to take a forefront in this movie, leave you with an eerily horrifying experience.
