Flatliners 1990

Kelly Wade post #8 -- Flatliners, 1990 -- Directed by: Joel Schumacher

When I was researching movies that were made in the year 1990, I read the premise of this one and knew immediately it was one I wanted to see. This group of students each has their heart stopped and started again, resulting in each having flashbacks or nightmares about things that happened to them in their past. However, my expectations of the movie fell short with how it was carried out and made. It's a pretty unrealistic premise and becomes a supernatural thriller that aims to engage the audience in an intense science-fiction theme so they look past some of the error of judgement and don't question the reality of how this would play out in real life. One of my favorite things about the movie was how the setting's played into the mood. Often dark and creepy, the medical school where these experiment took place was an essential part of the plot, especially because most of the scenes took place here. The way the first rescusiation scene was played out was very intense and intriguing, however as each character goes through the process, it loses its luster and becomes quite repetitious-leaving the viewer less than satisfied with the expectations vs. what actually is seen on screen. The film makers tried to combat this by making each experiment seem more and more dangerous each time, but that idea didn't really come through in the way it was intended.
